MINI EPI

The Challenge -

Redesign a product for sustainability

Mini Epi

Mini Epi is a portable, sustainable epinephrine auto-injector. Epinephrine is the first-line treatment for life-threatening allergic reactions known as anaphylaxis. Though auto-injectors should be carried at all times by those with life-threatening allergies, there are form and functional barriers that deter many from taking such precautions.

Form & Function

My solution to making the auto-injector easier to carry and more discreet was to reduce it size and include a loop to attach the device onto a key ring.

I also took this opportunity to improve upon the ergonomics of the traditional auto-injector, which is more cylindrical and pen-like in shape. As function of  the device intends for it to be held in a fist instead of as you would a pen, I rounded out and widened the form. This modification fits in the shape of the fist better and reduces the risk of the hand slipping during an emergency situation.

The oval window shows the color of the epinephrine. When the color of this window changes, it indicates that your prescription has expired.

Sustainable Changes

The Mini Epi is designed for simple disassembly for disposal and recycle. All plastic parts of the Mini Epi are made from post-consumer recycled plastic bottles. The syringe is made of glass and the packaging is made from recycled cardboard.

How it Works

Step 1: Remove blue safety cap by pinching and pulling on grooves.

Step 2: Hold the device with the orange needle guard near the outer thigh

Step 3: Swing firmly and push the orange tip against the outer thigh until you hear a "click". Keep the Mini Epi perpendicular to the surface of the thigh for 10 seconds.

Step 4. Remove the auto-injector from the thigh (the needle will recede back into the needle housing).

Step 5: Massage injection area for 10 seconds

Step 6: Seek emergency medical help immediately.

A complimentary shipping label and bio-hazard packaging is included with the Mini Epi for safe and easy disposal.
